(A,B,C) Stairwell Identification Sign Package

The Exit-Level Stairway ID sign packages include a Photoluminescent Stairway ID, Tactile Level ID, Tactile Exit sign, and Photoluminescent Exit sign to post inside exit-level stairwells at your facility. These Stairway ID signs should be installed in the interior of an enclosed stairwell, 5′ above the floor, and on a wall that is visible when the door is in both the open and closed positions. The tactile Level ID sign indicates which level of a building an occupant is currently on. These signs will feature a star to designate the exit level. Install them in the interior of an enclosed stairwell on the latch side of the door that leads out onto the corresponding level. Tactile exit signs note that the corresponding door on that floor leads to an exit. Install this sign in the interior of an enclosed stairwell on whichever door leads to an exit. The photoluminescent exit signs should also be installed on that door below the smoke-line.

Stairway ID signs are vital not only for a building's occupants, but also for firefighters who are attempting to navigate the building during an emergency. This makes it easier for them to know where they are, as well as how to get to their destination. Non-photoluminescent versions may be used when there are fewer than 4 floors (except in New York City).

(D) Exit & Stair Signs (corridor side)

Exit and Stair signs come in different forms, such as those that feature the standard stairs symbol. Though this pictogram isn't required, it helps to make these signs more conspicuous during an emergency. "Stairs/Exit" signs indicate that the stairwell is part of the exit egress path, while "Stairs" signs indicate that only a stairwell is located behind the door. Both are available in multiple styles to fit any decor. As tactile signs, they feature Grade 2 Braille, making them accessible to a wide variety of building occupants, and should be installed on the public corridor side of a door.

(F) Low-Level Egress Signs

Installed to direct traffic toward the final exit, photoluminescent low-level egress signs convey egress information in low-light situations. Most often they should be mounted on the bottom of the door leading to the exit or exit egress path, with the top of the sign being no more than 18" above the floor. This placement allows people who are crawling through smoke to still be able to see them. Options with directional arrows are also available for wall installation to direct traffic along the egress path.

(G) Fire Door Keep Closed Signs

A "Fire Door Keep Closed" sign informs tenants to allow the fire doors to do their job by remaining shut and blocking the blaze. Likewise, a "Fire Door Do Not Block" sign keeps these doors from being obstructed, preventing them from not closing properly. These are meant for doors with automatic closers, which will activate whenever a fire alarm goes off. Install on both sides of fire doors when required by local fire code.

(H) Photoluminescent No Exit Signs

Some doors in your facility may seem to lead outside, when in actuality they do not. In these cases, install "No Exit" signs on doors that may be confused with an exit door. These will clearly specify to not trying exiting through this doorway. On top of that, these signs are photoluminescent, allowing them to keep hallways lit during power outages. No Exit signs should be mounted on the door below the smoke line, with the top of the sign no more than 18″ above the floor.
